CK Motorsports Extreme Powerboat Cat Can Do |
For 23 years the Cat Can Do offshore powerboat team, operated by CK Motorsports, has certainly done their share of winning, including last years 2014 OPA Extreme World and National Championship. The 2014 APBA high point extreme team now aims to win off the water for animals. Racing4Paws provides a way for the Cat team to share the common thread of loving animals with fans. “We want to spread the word about the amazing work that our friends at animal shelters and chapters do, while providing entertainment and fun to thousands of race fans, giving people an opportunity to support the cause.” said Keith Holmes driver and owner of Cat Can Do Racing team. The team plans to use the 40’ Skater Offshore Extreme Powerboat powered by twin Sterling 1700hp engines, going over 180MPH to create awareness, raise funds and confront cruelty to animals, as they work with local animal organization at events around the nation. Roger Zuidema, Marketing VP of CK Motorsports commented, “As animal owners and racers, we want to use our influence for the good. We feel that by sharing our love, and creating a common value, racing becomes more meaningful.” Racing4Paws is a public service outreach from CK Motorsports and Cat Can Do Racing on behalf of animal shelters and humane society chapters. From reducing the number of abandoned or unwanted pets, to rescuing hurt, abused and abandoned animals and finding them a new forever home. Racing4Paws will encourage people to be actively involved in animal treatment and protection. The team encourages fans to enjoy the races, events and activities as the Cat travels the country in 2015. “We hope our fans continue to love the Cat on the water, but also hope that you will support this great cause,” commented Zuidema. THE CAT IS DRIVEGUARDED
As a boat owner, properly maintaining your sterndrives is a must. But maintenance alone cannot eliminate the threat of failure, especially when running twin 1550hp engines. Just ask Keith Holmes of CK Motorsports, driver/owner of Cat Can Do Racing. “We pay special attention to the Mercury Racing SSM V1 drives on our 40’ Skater race boat, or we find ourselves quickly out of races,” commented Holmes the 2014 APBA Extreme Division OPA National and World Champion. “That’s why when Marine Design Corporation contacted us with the DriveGuardian solution, I was quick to jump, especially as we re-vamped our ultimate Sterling Performance Engines to 1700hp with over 1400 pounds of Torque for the 2015 racing season. Marine Design Corporation’s Mike Clesceri is proud to announce a sponsorship with Keith Holmes and CK Motorsports for the 2015 Race Season. “We want to see Keith take home another championship and we are excited to work with such a top notch team.” Mike is an avid offshore power boater, with offices near Chicago, Illinois. “Chicago has a very short boating season so when a drive breaks, our boating time is really impacted. Plus, the cost of repairs can add up quickly and be very frustrating.” Mike turned his frustration into a patented drive protecting product and launched Marine Design Corporation. “We installed the very first DriveGuardian on our boat in 2013. We were finally able to run the boat in just about any water and experienced our first season ever without a drive repair bill! Of course, the fuel bill was definitely higher, but that‘s okay! We also had several race teams running them last season with great results.” DriveGuardian is a patented torque limiting clutch that replaces the stock drive coupler or damper plate. DriveGuardian reduces the torque spikes that occur when a propeller catches air and then re-enters the water. Our testing has shown that the torque spikes can be 2-4 times the peak torque of the engine. Removing these torque spikes has been proven to increase sterndrive reliability. DriveGuardian versions are available to fit nearly every engine/transmission/drive combination. “We are excited to experience the DriveGuardian protection,” commented Keith. “Not too many products live up to it’s hype. We expect this one to exceed our expectations. We use products that increase time on the water, improve safety, and keep our repair cost down. We look forward to our CK Motorsports mechanics installing DriveGuardian on boats we service” You can catch the Extreme/Unlimited Cat #19 has it participates in the OPA/OPGP series of Offshore Races. As of now, the Cat Can Do Racing4Paws schedule includes the Lake Race (June 5-7, Lake of the Ozarks, Mo.), Chase Charity Powerboat Event (June 12-14, Muskegon, Mich.), St. Clair River Classic (July 24-26, St. Clair, Mich.), International Powerboat Race (Aug. 7-9, Port Huron, Mich./Sarnia, Ontario) Detroit River International Powerboat Championships (Detroit, MI) Fort Myers Championships(Oct 2-4 Fort Meyers Beach,FL) OPA World Championships Englewood Beach Waterfest (Nov 18-22 Englewood,FL). |
Keith Holmes and Barry Glovick of the Cat-Can-Do Racing Team were the duo to beat in their 40’ Skater for 2014 OPA season after taking four consecutive wins as well as the national and world championship title in the Extreme Class. But a new year brings a new season and the team will be more than ready to hit the water for 2015.
“Right now, we’re just freshening up the graphics and we are converting our Sterling 1550 hp engines so they can run on ethanol, E-85 fuel. Hopefully we can get up to 1700 hp to 1800 hp out of them,” said Holmes, owner of Team Cat Can Do and founder of CK Motorsports based in Nunica, MI.
While the 2014 season began a little slower than expected after losing an engine in the first race in Biloxi, they put their A-game on for the rest of the power season, taking the top spot at the popular Lake Race in the Lake of the Ozarks, The St. Clair River Classic, The Port Huron International River Classic and The Detroit River Race.
“The Lake Race in the Ozarks was a great win after running with the extreme guys on flat water with a short course. It was a pretty crazy day,” said Homes.
For Holmes and long-time throttleman Glovick, running up against top players such as teams CMS and Miss Geico, which utilize Mercury Racing’s 1650 hp turbo-charged powerhouses, is no easy feat. Yet, Glovick and Holmes take the competition in stride, quite literally.
“The boat is pretty much competing in the 170 to 180 mph-range and those guys that run with Mercury Racing’s 1650 hp engines have a little bit of an edge on us,” said Holmes. “Our experience, however, helps balance that out and we make up for their speed in the turns so the competitors have to work a little harder to stay in front of us.”
Racing together since 1994 with more than 200 races under their belt, it’s safe to say Holmes and Glovick will be making big wakes once again for the 2015 OPA season with a fresh look and more power.
“This year it seems there will be some new boats out there competing, which makes for great racing. But we are looking at doing other series as well, perhaps in SBI or something that will also be beneficial to us,” said Holmes.
